Computer and Internet Activities

Early Computer Experience: I have worked with computers since 1961, initially solving engineering problems on "main frames" using Fortran, then creating interactive programs for instruction on "personal computers" (beginning in 1984).

Internet Experience: I was introduced to e-mail in 1987. Because of my experience writing interactive computer programs for instructional use, I realized that many of the early e-mail systems were not taking advantage of good computer technology, and that many users did not have adequate training.

My initial exposure to e-mail, telnet and ftp (the primatives) and subsequently to the world wide web, was due to my activities as a volunteer in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) where I chose to meet the challenge of improving communications between of people in many different countries (all members of this group known as IEEE). I developed and presented workshops for helping people learn how to use e-mail and ftp, and expanded my activities to include the World Wide Web in 1994. I have been writing my column "traveling the information highway" since 1992.

Since 1998 I have been using the web to teach university level courses - all course content is stored on our web server in password protected directories and registered students are given passwords to access this material. Slide versions of the "printed notes" are projected in the classroom. Each course, in effect, has its own web site.

In addition, I have been creating web sites for other individuals, institutions, and companies. I believe my experience in professional engineering enables me to design effective web sites that load quickly and deliver content to the viewer. You will notice that I tend to make minimal use of graphics and use small graphics files when I do.
